Frequently Asked Questions

What type of material is Arch Materials mining and what are its uses?

We are extracting high-quality limestone, which is being processed and used in the manufacture of concrete, asphalt, road base, agricultural lime, and many other residential, commercial, agricultural and general construction applications.

How deep is the mine, and how do you access the mining area?

Arch Materials developed 2 underground tunnels, approximately 1 mile in length, which wind their way down to the mining horizon, over 900 feet below the surface.

Why is Arch Materials mining underground, rather than in a surface quarry, typical to the area and other producers?

By choosing to mine underground, Arch has been able to bypass the geological impurities present in many area surface mines, assuring a higher level of product quality on a consistent basis.

Underground mining also minimizes many surface environmental impacts, reduces the amount of surface area required for an operation of this nature, and has allowed us to produce nearer the market using our products. This geographic proximity to the market place allows us to reduce the number of trucks required for high volume deliveries, which in turn reduces the use of diesel fuel and emissions.

Will the Batavia mine and operation be operating for a long time?

Yes, Arch Materials has in excess of 75 years of stone reserves available.

DOES ARCH MATERIALS UTILIZE EXPLOSIVES IN THE MINING PROCESS?

Yes, Arch uses a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO) to extract the stone from the formation.
